AERA Institute on Statistical Analysis for Education Policy
Mathematics Education and Equity
The AERA Institute on Statistical Analysis for Education Policy on Mathematics Education and Equity focuses on intersections of mathematics education and equity. The Institute includes a discussion of current issues in mathematics education policy, practice, and equity; and an overview of some quasi-experimental methods appropriate to the analysis of large-scale data. Relevant examples of recent large-scale studies are presented, and theoretical considerations related to the study of equity issues in mathematics education are discussed. Participants are introduced to several useful quasi-experimental techniques, including regression discontinuity, propensity scores, and instrumental variables.
Participants should be familiar with commonly used statistical methods (e.g., regression) and either SPSS or Stata. Participants should also be familiar with a large-scale data set that is appropriate to the study of mathematics education and equity. Instruction focuses on policy-relevant questions related to the focal topic and finding ways to address those questions by analyzing large-scale data sets.
